at this week's hearing. the man who will is mike morrell, his deputy and ci airks, now essentially the acting director of the agency. mr. morrell, a highly respected intelligence professional, has been with the agency for many, many years. would know all the same information that david petraeus knows. but the question on the table, carol, is whether that's going to be politically enough for congress. are they so irritated about this entire matter that they will subpoena petraeus in the weeks ahead and compel him to come testify about what he knows about the benghazi attacks? >> barbara starr reporting live for us at the pentagon this morning. this affair is baffling on so many levels. how could a man with such a pristine reputation show such awful judgment? and how could this woman have such unprecedented access? the answer may be as simple as one slippery step at a time. listen to these comments from general petraeus's mistress, ms. broadwell. they sure have a different meaning than when she first said them to cnn back in february. >> at some point i think he realized i was taking this resea

. that was confirmed by mike morrell, so instead of a political experience, it was the intelligence community not wanting to tip off the group. it was intended to mislead american's enemieenemies. >> it's surprising to me that when they were all up there with susan rice, meeting with these republican lawmakers, at one point mike morrell suggested it was the fbi that removed the words al qaeda, and several hours later, called and said he misspoke and it was are the the cia that did that. two months after all of this, how could he get that wrong? >> it's confounding even to me. ly tell you, what we're seeing here is susan rice is being held to account for what had been a whole series of missteps by the administration in the substantive handling of this and their ability to explain what happened. and every time they may one atmosphere mistake, it fuels a conspiracy theory that there is some sort of political experience behind this. having lived through my share of crisis in the white house, you can't chalk you have to deception what can be explained by the fog of war or just incompetence. they'r

, mike morrell? will he now testify, again? as you heard this week is the hearing on the benghazi attacks? >> that's what is expected. michael morrell is a career agent at the cia. he joined back in 1980 when he was 21 years old as an economic analyst. what's so interesting is that he is one of the top people who was briefing president obama during the planning process to take down osama bin laden. so president obama has an immense amount of confidence in michael morrell and that is giving him confidence as they head into this transition period with the cia. >> and in terms of members of congress, and the intelligence community, obviously, an interesting reaction there. did it come as a complete shock? >> a complete shock. i was working the phones all day long talking to my sources, both at the white house, and on capitol hill. and they just say they would have never expected this from david petraeus. his reputation really was sterling. so there was a lot of shock, a lot of sadness. you had dianne feinstein, senator dianne feinstein come out and say i understand the president's decision b

in his role at the cia. the president making clear that the next acting deputy director will be mike morrel. i would.out that general petraeus an the president had at times a tricky relationship, but they have become closer partners in recent months. and this comes at an awkward time. the president and general petraeus now dealing with the fallout from the death in benghazi in of ambassador chris stevens. the white house and the cia now both trading responsibility over who made the call for the eck plan nation in the days after as to why exactly it was described the way it was described. and the cia finally coming out, it would seem and taking some of the responsibility. it would seem, in the most recent days. now, with this development, general petraeus' departure, there will be questions of how this impacts the investigation. the white house insisting they are going ahead with this investigation as they have been all along. and obviously this has nothing to do with that libya incident with the deaths in libya. there will be some political sensitivities around it no doubt, brooke. >

, and will we finally get to the bottom of the story. he's going to send a stand-in who's his deputy, mike morrell, at the agency. i'm sure that he has a lot of information related to this, too, but there seems to be a lot of bureaucratic maneuvering at this point to figure out what they actually want to say at the hearings coming up later this week. shannon: some say this is salacious, a private matter between the petraeus', isn't something that should be discussed publicly, vetted mily, but -- publicly, but there are reports that paula broadwell had classified documents on her computers. we just don't know where she got them, but is it legitimate to ask questions about this relationship and how it could have impacted national security? >> well, i think the first question is there is how did this investigation get started. if, in fact, petraeus asked the fbi to look into it, i doubt very much that he had any culpability as far as disclosing any classified information or documents, but that he obviously felt that there was some concern. but, hey, you know, what's the cia director afraid of

this week. i think he deserves some personal space here. mike morrell, the acting director, probably as we speak, martha, is meeting with his team getting all the facts right so he can contribute to discussions in front of both intel committees this week but general petraeus will have personal insight into this because he did visit libya of at tack and over time, i think he owes it to the committees to share those insights with them. with regard to the timing, right, it is mysterious. i really don't have insight into it. it appears the bureau was balancing the law enforcement process, the privacy of individuals involved but hanging out there, is that requirement in law to keep the intelligence committees fully and currently informed about significant intelligence activities and so it is not surprising that senator feinstein and chairman rogers have shown a bit of pique at not being let in on this a bit earlier. martha: i have so many questions about this. you know, when you look at who knew and who was told you were the former cia director. you know, if, what would be the chain of command

an operational point of view, this won't have an impact. mike morrell is now the acting director, he was number two, extremely, extremely capable, very, very smart and certainly, you know, well involved in the agency's operations and capabilities. so i don't see a bump there. the question will be, you know, who do they tag to replace petraeus, and, you know, there's a couple of names that are surfaced that we're well known and familiar with in the administration -- jenna: like who? >> you have heard people talking about john brennan, he's certainly a known quantity in the intel community, and he's been close to obama for the past four years, considered, i think, by the administration probably a safe choice in the sense that, you know, they're very comfortable with him, they know him, and they believe him to be, you know, on side. there's a couple others out there, it's not my position to speculate and came in names, but -- name names, but i can think of a couple who are now retired from the agency, one in particular who would be a terrific director, but the white house will be looking for someo

that is scheduled this week, likely not. mike morrell, the acting cia director, folks on capitol hill think he has been briefed, he's been very engaged in what the cia did and didn't know with regard to benghazi and he's going to testify. however, there is a lot of anger, frankly, at general petraeus, specifically, again, going back to dianne feinstein. she said she heard he did a trip report on a recent trip to benghazi and that he hasn't filed it yet and she wants to know what was in the trip report and she even did throw out the s word, subpoena, to say she might be willing to subpoena that information on the floor of the senate. the other thing she said in other sources i'm talking to on the house side said as well is that even though he might not be there this week, because, you know, they respect him as a human being and going through a lot right now, they certainly intend to call him probably in a closed session to get what he knew and didn't know on his thoughts on what happened in benghazi. >> paula broadwoman well was on show when she was promoting the book she wrote about david petraeus

a lot of mistakes for -- a lot of respect for mike morrell. we also talked about his trip to libya. our role is to follow the facts. get away from the emotion and media hype and determine what the facts are and we questioned him under oath to make sure that occurred here that is what we did. >> are you going to change the assessment from saying it was al qaeda involvement to saying it was a spontaneous reaction? >> new information came in. it tells us what you get from the ground. when you get intelligence, you collected and given over to analysts. the send it out. kept evolving over the process. >> [indiscernible] al qaeda got stripped out by state doj and others. >> i am not aware there were not taught at that point with the talking points. >> the question is a but the scandal that led to his resignation? >> there was a mention of that, and his comments were basically that he was very sorry that this occurred. anything that occurred with respect to his personal situation had nothing to do with the way he handled benghazi at all. he also clarify this because this was of their, too. his

with mike morrell, acting director over the cia, and lay things out as they happened, you know, back when those benghazi attacks occurred. and coming out of the meeting as you have been playing there. there were still a lot of concerns. the white house and the president in particular has defended ambassador rice for all of her hard work. also defended the fact that the information that she gave out at the time was based on real-time information that they had gotten from the intelligence community. it later turned out not to be exactly accurate. and what you're hearing from the senators is that because that information may have been murky at the time, that she and others in the administration should have had some pause and should have said, look, we don't know what happened. we don't have good information. so we're not going to give bad information out. we're still waiting to find out if we can get any reaction from the white house to the latest development in terms of this tone from lawmakers. what we have seen over the last few days is sort of a ratcheting back of some of the harshest to

of control. cia director mike morrell with rice for the meetings initially told her the cia references to dropped in the talking points at the request of the fbi because the bureau did not want to compromise a ongoing criminal investigation. later cia officials called back to correct the record that in fact it was the agency was responsible. there was never any intention to mislead on benghazi rice said in a written statement, the talking points provided by the intelligence community and initial assessment were incorrect in a key respect. there was no protest or demonstration in benghazi. that the white house previousing spokesman jay carney tried to put the focus on the current investigation and not ambassador rice's people are moe interested in talking points for a sunday show several months ago than they are in finding out what happened in benghazi, bringing to justice to was responsible and insuring we take action to prevent something like that from happening again. >> reporter: late yesterday there was a statement issued by the senate majority leader harry reid who said the three

be replaced at the inquiry by acting cia director mike morrell, but others including senator lindsey graham say it's likely petraeus will be called on at some point. >> i hate what happened to general petraeus for his family and the families for those involved, but we have four dead americans in benghazi. we have a national security failure along in the making. i don't see how in the world you can find out what happened in benghazi before, during and after the attack if general petraeus doesn't testify. so from my point of view, it's absolutely essential that he give testimony before the congress so we can figure out benghazi. >> nbc news has reached out to general petraeus and paula broadwell. so far there's been no response. jill kelley and her husband, scott, released a statement to "the new york times" yesterday asking for privacy for their family. >> richard haass, there's so many questions. you brought it up last hour. there are so many questions that are raised by this, more questions than answers. and a lot of those questions go directly at the fbi. how did this investigation start?

had yesterday. we had the leaders from the intelligence community including acting cia director mike morrell and jim clapper, the dni, and others. the difference that we're looking for today is, general petraeus, obviously, was involved in making some of the key decisions. and we want to know what his thought process was. plus, he's the only member of the leadership team that has been back to libya since september 11. he was just there several days ago. being on the ground, he has a little bit different perspective. so we're going to be talking with him about that. >> hey, saxby, joe here. good to talk to you again. >> hey, joe. >> you know, susan rice, our u.n. ambassador, has been taking a lot of heat. john mccain, lindsey graham going after her for repeating what the president says was the intel that was available at the time. you're on the committee. can you tell us, was susan rice, from what you know, just repeating what was being told to everybody in washington at the time on what had happened in benghazi? >> well, here's what i think, joe. i think without question, i mean, you
